- Tablets, eye drops and nasal sprays can be used individually or in combination to combat the symptoms of hayfever.
- Sodium Cromoglycate eye drops are more of a preventative and suitable for people who suffer on most days through the hayfever season. Antihistamine types such as Otrivine-Antistin give more immediate relief and are probably better for those who suffer occasionally eg on high pollen count days.
- Corticosteroid sprays should be used every day throughout the hayfever season as a preventative and should be started a few weeks before the hayfever season begins. These sprays begin to work within a few days but may take a few weeks to reach their full effect.They are not suitable for people under 18 years of age.
- Antihistamines such as piriton may cause drowsiness whereas loratidine,cetirizine and acrivastine typically do not.
- Try to stay indoors when pollen counts are high and avoid grassy areas.Wearing wrap-around sunglasses can help keep pollen out of eyes.
